The moment Invisalign hit the market, it became something of a sensation. Up until that moment, the only way to correct improper tooth alignment had been metal appliances. While effective, these left a lot to be desired in the looks department and left many people unable to access treatment. Invisalign changed the game, making it easier for professionals and others with aesthetic concerns to achieve a healthier, more attractive smile.

How Does Invisalign Work? +

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign is a system that uses clear plastic aligners to straighten the teeth. While these aligners are similar to plastic retainers in appearance, they are very different in function. The plastic is shaped not to hold teeth in place, but to move them, with variations in the aligners placing pressure on the teeth. As the patient switches aligners every two weeks, the placement of the pressure changes. By the time treatment is complete, the teeth are in their ideal locations.

How Is Invisalign Made? +

How Is Invisalign Made?

The process starts with a digital scan of your dental anatomy. The wand used for this scan causes no pain and is non-invasive. The data from the scan is then processed using Invisalign’s software to create a treatment plan. Each step of the plan becomes an aligner in the series. In addition to getting an incredibly accurate treatment plan, the patient can see the final result before they agree to starting treatment.

What Makes Invisalign Great? +

Patients love Invisalign, but why is that? It is because this form of treatment has a lot of things about it that make it great. Here are some of the reasons Orthodontics Only patients love Invisalign.

  • When worn, you cannot see it.
  • Plastic aligners are gentler on the mouth than metal braces.
  • Treatment tends to go faster than with traditional braces.
  • The aligners do not cause temporary speech troubles.
  • Brushing, flossing, and eating are easy, as you can remove the aligners.
  • Adjustments are done by you at home, so you have fewer appointments.

We think that these are some pretty incredible benefits. If you agree, contact us to schedule your consultation.

Braces Basics

What do braces look like? You probably have a specific picture in your head of large, awkward, silver braces. However, those are a thing of the past. Now, even “traditional” braces have gotten a makeover. Here are the options you will have if you choose treatment with Orthodontics Only.

  • Traditional Metal Braces

    Traditional Metal Braces

While these are traditional in that they use the same components as braces of the past, they have changed a lot over the years. Now, the brackets are smaller, all pieces are lighter in weight, and they are made from a higher-grade of stainless steel. Put together, this makes these braces lighter, more comfortable, less visible, and more effective than they once were.

  • Clear Braces

    Clear Braces

If the idea of braces sounds good, but you still feel they are not discreet enough, you can opt for clear braces. There braces use clear brackets that blend in with the teeth. As a result, they are more difficult for others to see, but they still offer the quality results of the original system.

  • Gold Braces

    Gold Braces

Sporting metal braces can be fun, but not everyone looks good in silver. For those who want something warmer, we offer gold braces. These are traditional metal braces with a gold coating, giving them an elegant look that may work better for some patients.

  • Invisalign

    Invisalign

Invisalign is a form of treatment that is able to correct dental abnormalities without any metal parts. Instead, it uses clear, plastic aligners. These aligners are invisible, comfortable, and achieve excellent results. It is one of the most popular treatment options we offer.

Children’s Orthodontic Treatment

In most cases, orthodontic treatment starts right around adolescence. However, there is a small portion of children who could benefit from treatment at a younger age. This is why we and many professional orthodontic associations suggest that children see an orthodontist right around their seventh birthday.

Why Age Seven? +

Why Age Seven?

When selecting the right age for a first orthodontics appointment, we did not pick an age at random. The reason seven is best is that most children will have a mixture of permanent teeth and baby teeth at this age. This establishes various bite relationships and makes significant problems clear to the trained eye. At this age, there is also a lot of bone growth left, which the doctor can use to their advantage.

Why Is Early Treatment Important? +

Why Is Early Treatment Important?

The majority of children seen at age seven will be told all is well and to come back again around age 12. However, a small minority will be told early treatment is needed. When this is suggested, it is because there is a significant problem present that, if not treated early, will require painful and more invasive treatments later on in life. These treatments can include surgery, tooth extraction, and wearing headgear. Early treatment, on the other hand, often requires braces alone, or sometimes in conjunction with expanders. To put it simply, it is much better for the patient.

What Early Treatment Can Accomplish +

  • Guide jaw growth
  • Reduce risk of trauma from protruding teeth
  • Correct poor oral habits
  • Improve facial balance
  • Correct crossbites
  • Guide placement of permanent teeth
  • Make it easier to clean teeth

Early Treatment Appliances

  • Rapid Palatal Expander: An appliance that can widen both the upper and lower arches.
  • Removable Dentofacial-Orthopedic Appliances: This includes bionators, functional appliance, neck gear, head gear, and reverse pull headgear.
  • Lingual Arch: A space maintainer on the lower teeth.
  • Braces: The traditional form of treatment.
  • Invisalign: Used as a braces alternative when suitable.

If your child has reached age seven, now is the time to find out if they require treatment. Contact us to schedule a consultation.

Adult Orthodontic Treatment

There are many adults in Van Nuys who are unhappy with the appearance of their smile. Many of these individuals assume they are too old to do anything about it. However, this is not the case. Around a fifth of orthodontic patients are age 21 or older. Based on our own patients, we can tell you that more and more adults are seeking treatment every year.

Why Are Adults Hesitant to Seek Treatment? +

Why Are Adults Hesitant to Seek Treatment?

In our experience, there are three reasons why adults avoid getting orthodontic care:

  • They think they missed the window of opportunity.
  • They worry about how braces will be viewed by others.
  • They think the cost of treatment is too much to spend on themselves.

In truth, these are misconceptions. There is no reason for adults to avoid orthodontic care.

Addressing the Misconceptions +

Addressing the Misconceptions

There is no window of opportunity for orthodontic treatment. As soon as children get their permanent teeth, treatment is possible, and that does not change as you age. If the patient has gum disease, tooth decay, and bone loss, it can make treatment trickier. However, there are ways to address these problems and continue with orthodontics.

As for aesthetics, traditional metal braces are no longer the only option patients have. We offer aligners, clear braces, and lingual braces, all of which are less visible than normal braces, some of them being fully invisible when worn. These work in all environments, even professional ones.

But what about cost? Adults, especially those with dependents, can feel like the cost of orthodontic treatment is too much to spend on themselves. We can admit that treatment isn’t cheap, but it can still be affordable. We offer various options that can help patients access care no matter their budget.

If you want a healthier, more attractive smile, now is the time to get started.

What our Patient’s Say!

Benjamin D

I thought my teeth were not that bad. But after a friend told me that I might need braces because I had gaps in between some of my teeth that never really bothered me because at that time I was only 12 years old. I asked her where she got her braces and she told me she went to Orthodontics Only. At that time, we had no insurance so my parents asked the receptionist if they have financing and how much the interest rate is. She said they have zero percent financing so my parents were glad about this. Now I’m glad I listened to my friend’s advice on getting braces because everybody tells me how beautiful my smile is. Thanks so much Orthodontics Only!

My classmates used to make fun of my teeth at school because they were crooked and ugly. I was feeling so depressed and I didn’t want to go out anymore. My dad saw an ad on the newspaper for Orthodontics Only and asked me if I would like to go for a consultation. I didn’t have to wait long for the doctor to see me, she was very nice and she explained the procedure to me and made it easy to understand. Now after two years of treatment, my teeth are all straight, my confidence came back and I feel great every time I go out. All thanks to Orthodontics Only and their staff.

I was not happy with my smile a few years ago. I felt embarrassed because I had crooked teeth and I was afraid to smile sometimes. My mom suggested I get braces to correct my smile. She had heard really good things about Orthodontics Only so she decided to take me there. The doctor was very nice and friendly and she explained how my treatment will be. I decided to start my treatment that very same day. My teeth are perfect! I am no longer embarrassed to smile. Thank you Orthodontics Only!
